The 150-bed facility is set to serve prison officers, inmates, their families, and residents of neighboring communities, marking a major step in expanding healthcare access for underserved populations.

The State Department for Correctional Services has joined forces with Kiambu County to operationalize the Wanini Kireri Magereza Level 4 Hospital, located within the Prisons Staff Training College.

The 150-bed facility is set to serve prison officers, inmates, their families, and residents of neighboring communities, marking a major step in expanding healthcare access for underserved populations.

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi affirmed the county’s readiness to support the initiative, promising resources including medical specialists and a consistent supply of clean water.

“We are committed to partnering with the Correctional Services Department to ensure that the hospital is fully functional and meets the healthcare needs of its intended beneficiaries,” he said.

The collaboration seeks to align prison healthcare with national reforms, ensuring that correctional facilities contribute to the broader public health agenda.

The county has pledged to consider deploying consultants in specialized areas such as pediatrics, obstetrics, and gynecology, alongside reviewing the expansion of Medically Assisted Therapy (MAT) clinics at Ruiru and Thika GK Prisons into fully functional dispensaries.

The MAT expansion aims to support inmates dealing with substance use challenges while integrating these services into the wider healthcare system.

A technical team from Kiambu County has already inspected the hospital, assessing infrastructure, water and sanitation needs, and requirements for specialized medical services. This evaluation will guide the allocation of resources to make the hospital fully operational.

The initiative follows a directive from President William Ruto during the 46th passing-out parade of 3,862 Kenya Prisons Service recruits last month. The President urged the Correctional Services Department to work with county governments and other agencies to ensure the Magereza Level 4 Hospital becomes operational, reinforcing the country’s healthcare reforms.

Once active, the hospital will provide general medical services, emergency care, and specialized departments tailored to the needs of prison staff, inmates, and surrounding communities.

It is also expected to function as a referral center for other correctional healthcare facilities in the region, while easing the burden on nearby public hospitals.

Operationalizing the hospital will require continuous cooperation between county authorities, correctional services, and other government agencies.

By combining resources at national and county levels, the partnership aims to enhance medical training for staff at the Prisons Staff Training College and improve healthcare outcomes for both correctional staff and the public.

The Level 4 facility represents a major step in addressing historical gaps in healthcare provision within prisons, offering a model for similar collaborations across Kenya.

Through these joint efforts, the Wanini Kireri Magereza Level 4 Hospital is poised to strengthen Kenya’s correctional health system, deliver essential medical services, and contribute to broader community healthcare improvements.
